In this faith journey, we may find ourselves grappling with guilt and shame, burdened by the weight of our sins. However, we Christians are not condemned to carry this heavy load indefinitely. Act 3:19 reminds us that through repentance and conversion, our sins can be blotted out, bringing about refreshing times in the Lord’s presence. Let’s explore practical steps to deal with guilt and shame, seeking redemption and restoration in our Christian walk.
Repentance: A Change of Mind and Lifestyle
Repentance is not merely a verbal expression of sorrow; it involves a profound change of mind and lifestyle. We must realize our mistakes and own up to them; sometimes, this is the hardest thing to do because we tend to be stuck in our ways. However, if you genuinely want to change and truly get rid of the guilt and shame, you must turn to God and forsake your old ways. Actively seek God’s forgiveness, but also take the time to evaluate your life. Identify triggers and situations that lead you to temptation and sin. That could be friends, family, or situations at work, school, etc. You must start thinking about every little detail of your life and how it does or doesn’t lead to sin. The Bible tells us to guard our hearts with all diligence, which means to guard our ears, mouths, and eyes and be mindful of what we do and engage in.
Not everything is Godly, and you have to be aware of that; there are media and things we encounter every day that are sent to get us out of the will of God. So, you may have to cut off some friends or hang out with them less, stop listening to certain secular music, watching certain kinds of shows, like drama reality, shows that are sexually promiscuous, have lots of profanity, drug paraphernalia; if you would feel uncomfortable watching it with Jesus, then you shouldn’t be watching it. Act on this self-awareness by removing yourself from those situations and living separately from the world’s influences.
Proverbs 26:11 says, “As a dog returns to his own vomit, so a fool repeats his folly.” if there’s a sin you’ve been delivered from, do not return to it! Don’t put yourself in situations that would permit that kind of behavior. Otherwise, you are a fool, according to the Bible. We must realize these triggers so that we can stay away from sin and live holy unto God; once you do that, it’ll be easier to start your journey to being guilt and shame-free! Act 3:19 tells us, “Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord.” It is essential to know that God will forgive you! Once you receive that forgiveness, it is in your hands now to live a life of repentance, a change of mind, and a lifestyle!
Draw Near to God
James 4:8 says, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” Getting closer to God is what will cleanse us from the inside out. We’re not meant to stay in our dirt but to run to God and be cleansed and purified. Well, how do I do that? I am glad you asked; you can engage with God through various means, such as Bible study, listening to sermons, and spending intentional time in prayer. These all invite His presence and allow Him to change our hearts and minds. The more we immerse ourselves in the presence of God, the more we become like Him, gaining strength to resist temptation and sin. Also, as we spend time with God, He will reveal our triggers and what invites temptation, but He will also show us a way to get out. I know guilt and shame make us feel like we’re not worthy of talking or engaging with God, but that is what the enemy wants us to think, so we stay away from God so that we’ll never be who God created us to be.
However, getting close to God is the number one way we’ll get over guilt and shame; it’s how we’ll become new beings living in God’s whole purpose and plan! Our heart may tell us to wallow in self-pity, but the heart is deceitful above all things; that’s why it is pivotal to not listen to our feelings but to to listen to God. So, don’t listen to the enemy and continue feeling guilty, but pick up your Bible because God wants to talk to you; He wants to help you so you can live your best Christian life! God still loves you; He doesn’t hate you and never could! You are His child, created in His image, and you mean the world to Him!
Romans 8:38 says, “For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Nothing can separate you from God’s love, so rest in that, and know that no matter what sin you committed, God is waiting for you with open arms!
Forgive Yourself
God’s love is boundless, and His forgiveness knows no limits. As forgiven children of God, we must also extend this grace to ourselves. Recognize that making mistakes is inherent to our human nature but doesn’t define who we are in Christ. Forgive yourself, resting in the assurance that God is ready and willing to forgive, enabling us to move beyond our past and become better versions of ourselves. 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” If God can forgive you, we certainly can forgive ourselves. As Christians, we tend to hold ourselves up to a standard, and if we fall short, we ultimately feel unworthy, embarrassed, and useless and have a Christian guilt complex that makes it even harder to forgive ourselves. However, just because you messed up doesn’t mean God can’t still use you. It doesn’t mean your faith means nothing now, and you should live a life of sin.
Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” So, it happens! And God knew it would; that’s why He sent Jesus to die for our sins! You are forgiven, and God can still use you for His glory! Replace self-condemning thoughts with biblical truths about forgiveness and redemption found in Scripture. Use your experiences of guilt and shame as opportunities for personal growth rather than allowing them to define who you are as a Christian. Cultivate the habits previously stated, like prayer, reading the Bible regularly, attending church services, or joining small groups where you can grow spiritually alongside fellow believers. You can come back from this and use your testimony to share Jesus with others! It’s a lie from the enemy that you cannot be used or that your salvation is meaningless. The Spirit of Jesus lives in you, and you can do all things through Christ, who strengthens you, so you can forgive yourself, move on, and be better! You don’t have to stay like this; the choice is yours, so choose self-forgiveness and life.
Dealing with guilt and shame as a Christian involves a transformative journey of repentance, drawing near God, and extending forgiveness to ourselves. It can be a complex process, but know that God is with us every step of the way; He will not leave you nor forsake you. Remember, actively engage with God through prayer, scripture, and worship, allowing His love to heal and restore you. God desires us to move past our mistakes and find strength in Him. Embrace the freedom that comes from repentance and draw closer to the loving arms of our Heavenly Father.
Christian Guilt and Shame
Some wonder, “is guilt a sin?” and what God has to say about guilt and shame in the Bible. So, here are some Bible Verses about guilt and shame:
Psalm 32:5 “I acknowledged my sin to You, and my iniquity I have not hidden. I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,’ and You forgave the iniquity of my sin.”
Romans 8:1 “There is, therefore, now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”
Romans 10:11 “For the Scripture says, ‘Whoever believes in Him will not be put to shame.’”
1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Remember, you are free in Christ and there is no condemnation in Christ! You can live a joyful life, full of God’s promises, so don’t give up! I hope this helped and God bless!
