Happy Wednesday and welcome to another Guide! Do you feel as if you can make Sundays more holy and set apart? Well, here are some tips on how to honor the Sabbath! Let’s get started!
Go to Church

This seems like a given, but I know many people who claim to be Christians but don’t attend church. No offense, but that tells me you don’t put God first. You don’t reserve time to be in His presence weekly. That might be a hard trust, but that is how God sees it. They put their job, sleep, or just laziness over spending time with God at the beginning of the week. If you work in retail, like I do, don’t opt to open on Sundays. If you MUST work, like it isn’t an option, just close and come in at 3pm, but don’t dedicate the hours you should be in church to working. God sees your heart and knows it is not 100% for Him. But anyways, Hebrews 10:25 says let’s “not forsake the assembling of ourselves together.” It is pivotal to gather amongst saints to build your relationship with God. It shows God you honor Him and care to give Him the first few hours of your day at the beginning of the week. If you actually observe the Sabbath and want to set it apart from every other day, go to church, get in the presence of God, and experience His goodness. I promise you, you will not experience it anywhere else the way you do in church with other Christians. Not online, on youtube, on the radio, or listening to random teaching on your phone, but going to an actual building that is established as a church and praising God. If you struggle to find a good church in your area, don’t hesitate to contact me! I could help you out, especially if you’re in Florida!
No Secular Music

Oooo, this strike a chord, a nerve? Something? Well, if it did, I’m talking to you. The Sabbath is not holy if you don’t make it holy, and listening to Young Thug or G Herbo, is undoubtedly not setting this day apart for God. Any song that explicitly talks about sin is not acceptable for the Sabbath if you want to honor God. Even non-explicit music, like Adele, is not acceptable for the Sabbath; you know why? Because that music does not glorify God. On Sundays, we must set our day around glorifying God. I only listen to gospel on Sundays, music that talks about God, and is overall clean. No cursing, profanity, or explicit talk, just music that glorifies Jesus. Proverbs 2:1 says, “So that you incline your ear to wisdom, And apply your heart to understanding;” Do You know what wisdom is? The Word of God is wisdom, not songs about sex and drugs; that’s foolishness. So let’s incline our ears to what God says through music. Also, your spirit will appreciate a break from all the crap you put on the daily; it’ll be like a breath of fresh air. Faith comes by hearing God’s Word, so listen to something that will build your faith! And I know secular music isn’t doing that. Now, I don’t listen to gospel 24/7, but I have cut out explicit music; if it is secular, I listen with the discernment of the Holy Spirit, and if He tells me to skip it, I skip it. But for the most part, I listen to Christian music. This will not only aid in making the Sabbath holy, but it will only help build your spirit and relationship with God.
No Secular TV

Again, this helps with keeping our attention on God on the Sabbath. Matthew 6:22 says, “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore, your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If, therefore, the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness!” What we watch directly correlates with what our spirit looks like. Jesus is saying here, in simpler terms, your eyes are the gateway to your spirit; whatever you put in front of your eyes, you put in your spirit. If you put dark, depressing shows or movies on, that spirit of depression and darkness will enter your spirit. And vice versa, faith and joy will enter your spirit if you put on a sermon preaching the Word of God. So, on Sunday, be mindful of what you are watching. Does it invoke the Spirit of God or of the enemy? If you want the Sabbath to be set apart, I suggest that instead of watching regular TV, you try watching some sermons, Christian films, like on Pureflix.com, or shows like The Chosen. This way, even after going to church, you can continue to build your faith and overall relationship with God!
Limit Social Media

Social Media is filled with plenty of worldly things, so it’s best to limit our time there on the Sabbath. Instead of scrolling through Instagram, try to read a few chapters of the Bible. Take this day to really focus on God and honor Him! Colossians 3:2 says, “Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.” Being on social media directs our attention to the things of the world and away from Jesus. For instance, on Sundays, I try to limit my social media to my refinedforchrist account because I only follow preachers, evangelists, and other Christian accounts, so my feed is God-centered. However, on my regular Instagram, I follow my friends, celebrities, and even the shade room, so I try to limit my scrolling, so my spirit isn’t taken out of God’s presence. But even every day, I take control of what I look at on social media for my spirit’s sake. If you want Sundays to be holy and set apart, social media has to go or be limited and swapped out for something God-centered. This is important because the more effort you put into making the Sabbath holy, the more God will bless you. The more you honor God, the more He will honor you. So, this guide wasn’t made to condemn you or make you feel guilty but so that you can get what God has for you. You can’t get that if you don’t put God first, and why not start doing that on the day He ordained as holy? This is so you can be blessed, your relationship with Him can grow, and He can use you more! So, really do these things, dedicate this day to God the way it’s supposed to be, and I promise you’ll see your faith and relationship with God grow!
