You might’ve heard this phrase before, or maybe this is the first time you’re hearing it. Well, what does it mean exactly to have a divine purpose? Do only some people have a divine purpose and others don’t? To answer that, everyone has a divine purpose; it is not exclusive to certain people. Why? Because God created us each with a purpose, which is why it is divine; our purpose comes from God and absolutely no one else. Divine purpose is a God-given purpose, and everyone has it! So, let’s talk about it!

What is Purpose According to The Bible?

Ephesians 2:10 says, “for we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” I like this verse regarding defining purpose because it puts it together beautifully. According to this verse, purpose would be doing the good works we were created for in Christ. And what are those good works? Simply the will of God and anything involving carrying out God’s purpose, but what is His purpose? Matthew 28:19 explains it nicely when it comes to a Christian’s purpose: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” So, in our life, we are to spread the gospel and make disciples. When Ephesians says, good works, that’s what it means, everything that pertains to spreading the gospel. Furthermore, Christ’s Spirit empowers us to do these good works.

So, when you think about purpose in terms of the Bible, it is the good works we carry out empowered by Christ, and the good works are what we do to spread the gospel. The verse in Ephesians says that God “prepared beforehand” because God knew and prepared the way we would spread the gospel before creating us. For instance, I’m going to use my mother as an example, she is a singer, and she uses that to spread the gospel through her singing. God knew that and prepared a way for her to spread the gospel using her voice. So, now she is walking in that because before she was even born, God made a path for my mom to be a successful singer of the gospel. So, anything you are called to do, don’t ever think it’s impossible. God already paved a path for you to walk in your calling, He provided the resources and the tools, and He already put the people needed in your pathway. Everything is prepared for you to walk in your calling; you just have to answer it and partner with God. Doing what God created you to do shouldn’t be difficult because He prepared the way already! He is just waiting on you to walk in it!

Why God Created You

God created us to carry out His purpose and stand out. To be “the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill [that] cannot be hidden.” as said in Matthew 5:14. We are not to be like everyone else, but to emulate and embody the righteousness and light of Christ in this dark world. So much so that it “cannot be hidden.” Our righteousness is supposed to be seen by others so that they may be changed. It’s a part of the good works God created us for; how can we carry out good works if we are not set apart? It cannot happen, so that’s why God called for us to be different. Romans 12:2 says, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”

Let’s dive into this verse. I’m going to flip it, to prove what is good and acceptable and the perfect will of God, we must not be conformed to the world and be transformed by renewing our minds. We must stand out, be the light, the city on the hill, so we can do what God created us for! Without standing out or if we conform to the world, God cannot use us. We will never walk in the purpose that He prepared for us. This is dangerous because He created us to make disciples, to get people saved, and save them from hell, eternal damnation. So, though one may not think conforming to the world is dangerous, it is the worst thing a Christian can do. They neglect the great commission (Matthew 28:19), God’s primary purpose for us! If you neglect that, what is the point of claiming Christianity if you don’t do what Jesus commanded?

It is pivotal to stand out and be different; we must prove what is good and acceptable and the perfect will of God because that will lead us to fulfill the great commission. People will not accept Christ if they see we are just like everyone else and nothing changes. People don’t understand that people want to change, but they don’t know how or don’t think it’s possible. Through being the light and set apart, people see that it’s possible and a better life. Remember, God’s purpose is to have humanity saved, and you’re a part of that! So, He created us to be righteous and be His light so we can lead others into the light!

I Peter 2:9 says, “you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;” You are God’s own special people, and created to call people out of darkness just like He did for you! The gospel is not meant to be kept secret; we are the light of the world, and God created us to change the world with His light! Be set apart because it is God’s purpose for you!

Additionally, there are other reasons God created man and I thought I would list them here. He created us to praise Him (Psalm 102:18, Psalm 148:5, Psalm 150:6), to be fruitful and multiply, (Genesis 1:28), to have dominion over everything in the Earth (Genesis 1:28), and for a specific time, to impact a specific generation (Esther 4:14).

Why is Knowing My Purpose Important?

I explained a little bit why knowing your purpose is important previously. Learning and living out your purpose will save people from hell. That’s, however, one reason. In being all that God wants us to be, of course, we’re going to lead people out of darkness, but also, it’s so that the devil cannot take over your life. When you don’t know your purpose, it is easy to get lost in the world and do whatever, have no direction, no path, and just exist. When you have no direction, it is easier for the devil to come in and do what he pleases. But, when you are in the will of God and living out your purpose, you recognize the attacks of the enemy and have the power to rebuke him. 1 John 4:4 says, “you are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”

You are an overcomer and are greatly empowered by Christ when living in purpose! But how does one figure out their purpose? Yes it is to spread the gospel and be set apart, but how? Is it by writing songs? Playing instruments? Preaching? Well, that is between you and God, and next week we will be talking about How Do I Find My Divine Purpose? Everyone is different and can’t spread the gospel the same way, God created us to be unique! Serving God doesn’t have to be boring, it can be fun as God uses what we genuinely enjoy to carry out His purpose! So, see you next week! I hope this helped, and God bless!
