In today’s society, not many people think about the impact of their words; therefore, they will just say anything. However, according to the Bible, allowing anything and everything to come out of your mouth is foolish. Our words are a creative ability that God gave us, and we must use it wisely; there’s a reason why no other species can talk but us. It is because we are created in the image of God and are to take after Him. For a moment, I want you to think about what God did and can do with His words. Now, imagine the tremendously amazing things we can do with our words if we are made in His image! God gave us our ability to speak as a privilege, so let’s use our speech wisely! Without further delay, let’s talk about the power of our words.

The Tongue can Preserve or Destory Our Life.

Don’t underestimate the power of your words because they can determine the outcome of our lives. Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit.” We cannot take our words lightly; they can destroy or build our lives. Through your tongue, you can either bring life or death to a situation; for instance, if you are facing back problems, you can either complain about the pain or speak God’s word over yourself. Which one do you think will yield positive results? If you continue complaining, the pain will only worsen, and you are eating the “fruit” of your words. On the other hand, if you proclaim healing, then your pain will go away. You must think before you speak, “if I say this, do I want this to happen?” because you will eat the fruit of your words whether you like it or not.

Furthermore, Proverbs 15:4 says, “A wholesome tongue is a tree of life, But perverseness in it breaks the spirit.” Again, we are getting the picture that good, wholesome words bring life. And this doesn’t have to only be with what we say about ourselves but also about others. Did you know that your words can also negatively or positively impact other people’s lives? That’s why it is pivotal to watch what you say about people. Because your wholesome words can be a tree of life to someone else, so be careful how you talk about people.

The verse also states that “perverseness in it (the tongue) breaks the spirit,” so speaking in ways that aren’t pleasing or acceptable according to God can break your spirit. When you repeatedly say things that contradict God’s Word and are generally off, it takes a toll on your spirit because with each word contrary to God’s, the Holy Spirit in you is being dimmed. See, the Holy Spirit can only dwell in a holy temple set apart for God, and being set apart means living for God and talking for God. Follow me; as Christians, we are to speak like Christ spoke, words that are edifying, uplifting, good, and powerful, not words of defeat or foul language. We are slowly pushing out the Holy Spirit with each word that is not like Christ. The Holy Spirit cannot comfortably reside in a body that curses, speaks explicitly, tears others down, gossips, and lies. He simply can’t and will leave if you continue to talk in such a way. This is why perverseness in the tongue breaks the spirit because it makes the spirit of Christ in you uncomfortable. The King James Version says, “But perverseness in it is a breach in the spirit.” So, when put that way, when you speak contrary to God’s Word, it’s like an intruder came within your spirit because, as Christians, we are not meant to speak that way.

Moving Along, James 3:5 says, “Even so, the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles!” Never underestimate your words because they have a real and huge impact. For an extreme example, when people say ‘kill yourself’ and a person actually does, it shows the serious effects of words. The person who said that didn’t hold a knife to that person’s throat and kill them, but their words were enough to take their life. So, be picky about the things you say because you never know what will start a flame that turns into a fire that destroys your life. This is why Proverbs 21:23 says, “Whoever guards his mouth and tongue Keeps his soul from troubles.” Those who carefully choose their words tend to have a better life. They don’t just say anything but are meticulous because they realize the weight of their words and don’t wanna eat bad fruit but good fruit. Your words are so powerful; they keep you out of trouble and out of spiritual danger, which is why it says, “keeps his soul from trouble.” One who chooses his words wisely tends to have more peace, joy, and wisdom. A person who says anything experiences much more spiritual anguish because they are reaping the seed they sowed with their words.

Watch Your Mouth

There is a way we are meant to speak according to the Bible regarding the power of our words. Pslams 34:13 says we should “Keep [our] tongue from evil, And [our] lips from speaking deceit.” So, we should speak good things, like words that uplift each other, build faith, bring joy, and be honest. These things align with how God speaks; from personal experience, anytime I hear God’s voice, it’s always encouraging, wise, insightful, and the truth. Do you notice how this verse pairs evil with deceit? God hates lying, and the devil is the father of lies, so to stay on God’s good side and keep yourself from being used by satan, it is best to be honest. Deceitful words slowly but surely separate us from God, and that is the last thing you want.

Additionally, God doesn’t want us to just say everything we think. Proverbs 17:28 says, “Even a fool is counted wise when he holds his peace; When he shuts his lips, he is considered perceptive.” There is value in not saying anything at all; not every discussion is for you to have, and sometimes you must sit and observe. In those silent moments, God may reveal something to us, so it is not our turn to speak but His. So, choose when you will speak, which can make a huge difference in how you perceive things and how people perceive you.

Also, it’s essential to hold our tongue because Jesus says in Matthew 12:36 that “for every idle word men may speak, they will give an account of it in the day of judgment.” So, with every careless word you say, God will judge. This is why you must think before you speak! Is this something you want God to judge? Is it even worth Him judging, or is it better for you to keep quiet? And the answer is most likely to stay quiet. We must think about our words and stop using them carelessly but in the way God intended.

What Are You Saying?

We can control what we say through what we consume. We can control what we talk about through the music we listen to, shows we watch, books we read, etc. Once you consume enough of certain content, you’ll begin to talk about it; Matthew 12:34 says, “Brood of vipers! How can you, being evil, speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” Meaning, whatever you fill your heart with, you will talk about. So, based on what topics you bring up, people can understand what you fill your mind and heart with. For example, if you watch many cooking videos, you may talk about food, so pay attention; what am I talking about? And are you talking about things that bring glory to God or dishonor? Are the things you talk about reveal you’re a Christian or put you in the crowd with everyone else? Do you stand out in your speech? Your speech reveals what you care about, so start paying attention to your words and see if Jesus comes up. If not, then maybe it’s time to start consuming more Godly content, your words reveal the condition of your heart, and hopefully, your heart is set on Christ!

You Will Have What You Say

Our words are to be used for faith! We are to move mountains and obtain victories with our words! This is what I met when I said our words can destroy or build our lives! Our faith heavily depends on our words, and if your words aren’t aligned with the Word of God, then you will receive nothing by faith. Mark 11:22-24 Jesus says, “Have faith in God. For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.” So, if we say something and don’t doubt God’s ability to perform, it will happen! That is how we are supposed to use our words in faith. To proclaim something and believe God to bring it to pass! To go to God boldly in prayer, knowing He’ll come through. We can speak to any situation and get into submission God’s word! You can and will have what you say, so choose what you say wisely because it can determine everything!

We can stop the enemies’ plans against our lives just by our words. We can overcome our most brutal battles through our words. We can bring God’s word into reality through our words! God gave us this great power, our ability to speak so that we can be like Him! Heal the sick, cast out demons, make deaf ears hear, and move mountains! It is rare that Jesus ever healed someone without saying something first or cast out a demon without verbally rebuking them; it is because it is something about physically speaking that makes all the difference. You can lay hands all you want, but 99% of the time, if you don’t talk to that spirit, it won’t leave! We have the spirit of Christ living in us, so when we speak, that is the power of God speaking through us. When we tell unclean spirits to leave with Christ-given authority, they have no choice but to leave. We are God’s voice on earth, which is why we must say things that bring Him glory. We must use our words the way Jesus did to shake the world for the glory of God.

Our words are vital and require much more thought before we speak them. They can change the whole course of our life and our faith journey. So, choose today. Will you use your words to build your life or destroy it? The choice is yours. I hope this helped, and God bless.
