Why does God hate sin in the first place? Well if you remember way back to An Introduction to Christianity, I mention how sin creates a barrier between us and God. And that we cannot have an intimate relationship with God as long as sin is in the picture. That alone is the biggest reason why God hates sin because as you forsake a close relationship with Him, you’re forsaking all the promises that God gives us through His Word.
God Rewards Those Who Follow Him
The verse I wish to focus on is Romans 8:7-8, which reads “Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God”. When you’re living in sin, you are living opposed to God and His Word. God hates sin because it puts His creation against Him and now they are unable to live the life that God wishes them to. God wants us to live a prosperous life, whether that be financially, mentally, emotionally, or physically. But as you live in sin, you disqualify yourself from those blessings but all God wants to do is bless us! So, you see how it can get messy? God wants to give us everything that is good for us but He cannot do it if you are living in sin. That’s why He hates sin because it prevents Him from being able to bless you and fulfill His promises. God doesn’t want us to struggle but He can’t do anything to help if you’re living carnally.
for I know the thoughts that I think toward you…thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope”.
Jeremiah 29:11
In Jeremiah 29:11 God says, “for I know the thoughts that I think toward you…thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope”. Here it is evident that all God wants for us as His children are good things that push us forward in life. However, when you live in sin, God cannot give you peace and He cannot prosper you. Romans 8:6 says, “for to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace”. So when you are following God’s Word–the spiritual things of life–God is able to give you peace and His is able to prosper you. Whereas, when you are “carnally minded” you don’t have access to any of those things, you may try through Earthly measures, but nothing is going to compare to what God has for you. So, this is why sin disgusts God because He sees that it is destroying and halting our life. You can’t get peace or rest like the Bible promises, you’ll just continue to struggle as you refuse to live life God’s way. Jesus says that He is the way, the truth, and the life in John 14:6. So when you live any way that isn’t following after Jesus, you are living a life that is headed towards “death”. Additionally, another reason God hates sin is because sin brings forth death and the reason why God sent Jesus was so that we wouldn’t have to experience death. And that death overall is eternal damnation in Hell, which is the ultimate reason why God hates sin. It does not only prevent a relationship with Him on Earth but eternally it prevents a relationship with Him.

Now, circling back to being disqualified from God’s blessings because of sin. As I mentioned before God hates sin because He cannot give us the life He wants to. God can only prosper those who are in His Will. Joshua 1:8 says “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success”. So, you are only promised good success and prosperity if you follow the law of God. Furthermore, Psalm 1:1 states “blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, Nor stands in the path of sinners”. Just from living according to God’s Word, you’re putting yourself in a position to be blessed. Whereas living in sin puts you in a position to reap destruction. Sin destroys your life as it kills your spirit and depending on the sin, your physical body as well. Sin brings shame, guilt, hatred, and all things that aren’t God.
In John 10:10, Jesus says, “the thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly”. God never intended for us to live in sin, He intended for us to have a close relationship with Him through Jesus so that we can live an abundant life. So, if you’re wondering why you’re not moving forward in life, why things aren’t falling into place, and just overall struggling, when the Bible promises us favor and blessings from God; it is probably because you are living in sin and God cannot reward bad behavior. No matter how much God loves us and wants the best for us, He is too holy to let sin slide.
God is Holy
God is so holy that His presence would destroy us. Due to sin being a part of human nature our bodies cannot handle someone as holy as God. And vice versa because God is so holy, even our best selves are still filfthy to God. We need Jesus in order to stand before God and that is why God sent Him in the first place. God loves us so much that He wasn’t going to let sin stand between us, so He created a solution through Jesus.
1 Peter 1:15-16 says, “but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy”. God calls us to be holy as He is holy through Jesus. That is the only way we can have a relationship with Him. So, it doesn’t matter how much you love God, if you are living in sin, you cannot have a fulfilling relationship with God. No matter how much you try to convince yourself and try to make it work, it won’t. God called us to a certain standard and that is to be holy as He is and He gives you the power to do that through Jesus. You cannot choose both sides, you must choose one. God hates sin because it prevents us from having a satisfying relationship with Him, and not just satisfying to us, but satisfying to Him. Make the choice today to give up sin, so God doesn’t have to watch His precious creation struggle anymore. Let’s decide to live righteous so that God can fulfill all of His promises to us.
