Do You Know What is Considered Sin in the Bible?

Do you know what is considered sin in the Bible? We’ve been going through that for the last couple of blogs, and now we are finally closing it! I hope this mini-series has helped you realize what sins are and how to identify sins in your life. Also, knowing the difference between sinning and living in sin, that living in sin is when you are continually sinning without repentance. However, if you are someone who messed up and felt convicted and repented, then you are not living in sin. But you need to be more careful about temptation; we’ll do that for the next blog!

What is a Sin According to the Bible

We have been going through Galatians 5:19-21, which tells us what counts as a sin in Christianity. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 also tells us what is a sin. Galatians 5:19-21 says, “Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”

In the previous blog, we went through most of them, so let’s go out with a bang!

Murders Are Considered Sin

How to know if something is a sin is asking yourself is it rooted in love? Murder is something that is rooted in hate or revenge, no matter what the reason is. Sometimes it may be for protection, but that still isn’t an excuse. We need to take some time and think about our heart posture. The things that we do, what is it rooted in? Does it stem from the love of Christ and your faith? Or does it stem from the fleshly desires that want to take over your life? You must not give the devil place, as Christians, we must flee and live holy!

Thou Shall Not Murder

Exodus 20:13 says, “Thou shalt not kill.” And I know most of us haven’t killed anyone, but murder is not where murder starts. It starts with sinful thoughts and suggestions from the enemy. It can start with thoughts of dislike or jealousy that turn into hate. So keep your thoughts in check! II Corinthians 10:5 says we must “[cast” down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” If your thoughts are telling you to kill someone, you are putting your fleshly desires above the Word of God, that tells us not to kill anyone.

If we love God and obey Him, we wouldn’t think about murdering someone. Murder is rooted in hate and wicked and unclean thoughts. Any spirit that tells you to kill someone is not a spirit of God; any spirit that tells you to do something not rooted in love is not God. Through murder, you open a HUGE door for the enemy to come through. It’s like you invited him over and greeted him yourself. Committing murder is disobeying God’s instruction, thou shall not murder, and love your neighbor as yourself, and we all know that disobedience to God’s Word is sin. However, I doubt you would ever kill anyone, but we must be mindful of our thoughts towards someone we dislike. Sin starts in the thoughts.

Drunkenness is Considered Sin

Don’t stop reading now, yes getting drunk is bad and it is a sin. Although the Bible may not explicitly say don’t drink, you shouldn’t as a Christian. 1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” By drinking and getting drunk, you open a door for the enemy. This is why when you’re drunk, you may become violent, sexually aroused, sad, or emotional. These are all spirits that the devil brings when you open the door by drinking. We are called to stay sober, number one, so that we give no place for the devil in our lives. Also, so we can be sensitive to the spirit of God.

Stay Away From Alcohol

You can’t follow the leading of the Holy Spirit when you’re drunk. So, if you want to get closer to God, you have to ban alcohol from your life. In the Bible, God told the mothers of Samson and Samuel to keep alcohol away from their lips. If alcohol wasn’t bad, why would God tell them this? Because it is harmful not only to you physically but to your Spiritual life! Samson and Samuel were used greatly by God and one of the reasons why is because they never touched alcohol!

Additionally, when you drink, you cannot give glory to God. I Corinthians 10:31 says, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” Drinking alcohol does not glorify God. It quenches the Holy Spirit and places a barrier between you and God. Remember, everything we do as Christians must serve a purpose. And that purpose is to glorify God, and in my experience, when I drank, it wasn’t to glorify God. Drinking only glorifies and pleases your flesh, and pleasing your flesh over God is considered a sin. The Bible says many times that we must kill our flesh, and putting down the bottle is how you can start.

How to Stop Drinking

If you struggle with drinking and you need help, let me offer you some advice! First, pray and ask God what you must get rid of. In my case, I had to stop going to parties and the club. Those environments welcome getting drunk, so it was a no for me. Sometimes it is friends, maybe you have friends where you can’t hang out with them without drinking. For me, I had to constantly tell my friends I don’t drink to the point they don’t even ask me to go out. If I am around them, they don’t offer me a drink because they know.

Get rid of any alcohol you have around you and be vocal and tell everyone you don’t drink and don’t offer. Remember the Holy Spirit gives you the power to overcome temptation, if you’re tempted, leave. Leave the house, party, get together, whatever it may be, just go. Start speaking scriptures about righteousness and don’t give the devil place! Lean on God!

Revelries

For the final sin listed, there are revelries. Revelries are wild parties, specifically those that include large amounts of alcohol. So clubs, bars, tailgates, and wild parties, are not places that Christians should be, and those places lead to sin. It can be tricky because yes if you go to the club, don’t drink, don’t engage in dirty dancing, you’re not sinning, but the temptation is there. Previously stated, I said give the devil no place, and staying out of these spaces, prevents giving the devil an open door to go through.

If you’re in a place like that, enough times and for long enough, eventually you’re going to give in to the temptations that are present. As Christians especially, we should try to limit our attendance to events like that so that the enemy can’t can’t us and open a door to unclean spirits. So be mindful of where you hang and how you represent God in all your ways.

A Call To Live Righteous

I hope this was helpful with how to know if something is a sin and what is a sin, in general! Some times when it comes to defining sin, people have their own opinions. However, we must uphold the opinion of the Father, above all. Jesus is our Lord, so we must live according to His leadership! And that means living a righteous life and leading people to Christ by the way we live. If we live in sin as “Christians,” how are sinners supposed to know they need to change?

As sin becomes a bigger problem in a Christian life, the less effective they are for Christ. So, if you slid back into some of your old ways, or if these are your current ways and you wish to change, know first that Jesus still loves you. You can repent and come back, or if you don’t know Jesus, you can repent and join the faith! If that’s something you want to do, say this prayer..

“Dear Heavenly Father, I repent of my sins and turn my back to them. I give Jesus my whole life, heart, mind, and soul by faith; I believe Jesus is the Son of God and that He died on the cross for my sins, and I accept Him into my heart now. I believe Jesus is Lord, and I give my life to Jesus! Amen!” If you said this prayer, go to the I Just Got Saved page for church recommendations, a Bible, and a journal!

I hope this helped, and God bless!
